One in this western series that chronicles the adventures of the Lone Ranger and his faithful American Indian partner, Tonto.

A lawyer named Luther Gage has a scheme to take control of a gold mine owned by his client, the Farnum family, involving making it appear that the mine has gone dry to get the client to sell to him. He orders that blasting powder be set up around the mine in case the authorities discover his scheme. The Lone Ranger receives a letter from the client, Mrs. Farnum. Her late husband was an old friend of the Lone Ranger, and he left his wife the mine to provide for her. She finds it unlikely that the mine has gone dry due to her husband's mining expertise, and so she has sent her son Jim, also a mining engineer, to inspect it. She asks for the Lone Ranger to help Jim and he decides to do so.

Gage is informed that Jim is coming and orders his right-hand man Lasco to assassinate Jim on the way there. On the stagecoach to town Jim rides with a young reporter named Mary Tanner, who recently wrote an article on the Lone Ranger and Tonto's capture of a notorious gang. Lasco shoots Jim and the Lone Ranger and Tonto, not far off, chase down the fleeing stagecoach. He reveals that the shot suffered by Jim was not fatal; a book on metal ores in his breast pocket absorbed most of the shot. Jim awakens and Mary introduces him to the Lone Ranger, whom he remembers as a friend of his father. They do not suspect Gage of being behind the ambush due to his reputation as an upstanding, law-abiding citizen. The Lone Ranger sends them ahead to town and advises them to exercise caution while he and Tonto track down the man who shot Jim.

The Lone Ranger and Tonto determine that Lasco rode off on a lame horse with a loose shoe, and decide to see the town blacksmith, deducing that the shoe would be taken to him for repairs. Gage sees Jim and Mary ride into town and decides to lure Jim into the mine for his inspection and then use the blasting powder to cause a cave-in, making it appear as though it was an accident. Meanwhile, the Lone Ranger and Tonto interrogate the blacksmith while Lasco watches from the shadows. When the blacksmith identifies Lasco as the one who brought him the shoe, Lasco reveals himself and holds the Lone Ranger at gunpoint. He plans to shoot all of them and make it appear as though he foiled a robbery. However, the blacksmith provides enough distraction for the Lone Ranger and Tonto to capture Lasco. The Lone Ranger sends Tonto to take Lasco to the sheriff's office while he goes after Gage.

In the mine, Gage holds Jim at gunpoint and explains his scheme, attempting to force him into the tunnel with the blasting powder. Gage realizes the Lone Ranger is coming and forces him to disarm himself. However, the Lone Ranger manages to sneak up behind Gage and get him to surrender. When Gage tries to catch the Lone Ranger unawares, the Lone Ranger shoots back, setting off the blasting powder and pinning Gage beneath the rubble. He and Jim free Gage and send him and Lasco to the sheriff before he and Tonto ride out of town. Commercials deleted.
